“How can I control my sugar cravings?“– I usually get this question at my office.
Truly if you eat balanced meals with high protein and fiber you will not experience
sugar cravings as often. You are setting yourself up for sugar cravings when you select the wrong combinations of food for lunch like a skimpy turkey sandwich on sourdough bread and a bag of chips. There is very little protein in the sandwich and absolutely no fiber. The protein along with the fiber will prevent blood sugar fluctuations which causes the craving for sugar. If you take a lunch that is composed of 4-6oz. of turkey on 100% whole wheat bread with a bowl of minestrone soup and an apple, I guarantee that you will not succumb to sweets.

Everyone believes that people with diabetes cannot have any sugar and sadly they must live without dessert for the rest of their lives. Well, as a Registered Dietitian, I’m here to tell you that this is not true. People with diabetes can eat sugar, desserts, and even food that contains caloric sweeteners such as molasses, honey and maple syrup. Why? Because people with diabetes can eat foods that contain carbohydrates, whether those carbohydrates come from starchy foods like pastas or sugary foods such as candy. It just a matter of setting up a meal plan that is balanced and incorporates your dessert into your day. Read further and you will see how easy it can be when you have diabetes.
